Lahar (Volcanic Mudflow)

A lahar is a destructive mudflow of volcanic debris and water. Triggered by eruptions melting snow/ice, crater lake breaches, or heavy rain on ash deposits. They can travel 60+ km at 60+ km/h.

The 1985 Nevado del Ruiz lahar killed 23,000 people in Armero, Colombia, 74 km from the summit.
