How Ranked Choice Voting Works

Voters rank all candidates in order of preference (here: by proximity).

Round 1: Count first-choice votes. If someone has a majority (>50%), they win.

Each round: Eliminate the candidate with fewest votes. Their voters' ballots transfer to their next choice.

Quirk: RCV can sometimes eliminate a candidate who would beat every other head-to-head (the Condorcet winner).
