Rayleigh-Taylor Instability

When a dense fluid sits atop a lighter one under gravity, the interface is unstable. Small perturbations grow into characteristic "fingers" and "mushroom" structures. This occurs in supernovae, oil-water mixtures, and atmospheric phenomena.
