Mycorrhizal Symbiosis

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonize plant roots, forming branched arbuscules inside root cells for nutrient exchange. The fungal hyphae extend into soil to acquire phosphorus, trading it for plant carbon. This symbiosis is ancient (~450 million years).
