Methanogenesis

Methanogens are archaea producing methane (CH₄) in anaerobic environments. Three main pathways: Acetoclastic (acetate → CH₄ + CO₂), Hydrogenotrophic (H₂ + CO₂ → CH₄), and Methylotrophic (methyl compounds → CH₄). These communities compete for substrates in sediments and digesters.
