Syntrophy & Cross-Feeding

Metabolic division of labor allows bacterial communities to process complex substrates more efficiently. Strain A ferments glucose to acetate. Strain B oxidizes acetate completely. Neither can survive alone - they form an obligate syntrophic relationship. This is common in biogas production and the gut microbiome.
