About the Monroe

The Monroe Calculator (1912) was an American rotary calculator that pioneered motorized operation. Unlike manual crank machines, pressing an operation lever engaged an electric motor that automatically cycled the mechanism.

The Monroe introduced automatic multiplication and division — the operator simply entered the numbers and the machine computed the answer automatically, cycling through each digit of the multiplier.
