Coral reefs can exist in two stable states: coral-dominated or algae-dominated. A disturbance (bleaching, storms, COTS) can push a reef past a tipping point. Once algae take over, positive feedbacks (algae smother coral recruits, dead coral = more algae substrate) lock in the degraded state. Herbivory and low nutrients help resilience.
