Crown-of-Thorns Starfish

Acanthaster planci outbreaks cause nearly half of all coral loss on the Great Barrier Reef. A single COTS can consume 10m² of coral per year. Outbreaks are driven by nutrient runoff (feeding larvae) and overfishing of predators like giant triton snails and large fish. Recovery takes 10-50 years.
