Over 100 coral species synchronize spawning using lunar cues. Spawning typically occurs 3-6 nights after the full moon, when the dark period between sunset and moonrise is longest. Water temperature (above 27°C) triggers gamete maturation months earlier. The synchronized release of eggs and sperm maximizes fertilization.
