Coral Bleaching

Corals host zooxanthellae algae that provide up to 90% of their energy via photosynthesis. When water temperature rises 1-2°C above the summer maximum (~29°C), heat stress produces toxic reactive oxygen species, forcing corals to expel their symbiotic algae -- turning white (bleaching). Sustained heat causes mortality.
