MONIAC Controls

MONIAC (1949)

Built by Bill Phillips at the LSE, the Monetary National Income Analogue Computer used colored water flowing through transparent pipes, tanks, and valves to model the UK economy. Adjusting valves changed “tax rates” and “government spending” — the resulting water levels showed GDP, savings, investment, and trade balance. About 14 were built; several survive in museums today.
